What does this guide teach you? It teaches you about IVs, how to check them and chain breed in Pokemon X/Y/ORAS :
What are IVs and why are they important? - IVs stand for Individual Values. They determine the stats of a hatched or caught Pokemon in the game that has not been trained (as in battling other Pokemon to gain EVs).

An example of an IV spread is 31/30/29/28/27/26 (Legend: HP/ATK/DEF/SP-ATK/SP-DEF/Speed). Matching colors is fun, is it not? Use the legend to map the stat and find out what it is :

HP: 31
ATK: 30
DEF: 29
SP ATK: 28
SP DEF: 27
Speed: 26

Important Notes:
  • A stat can have a maximum of 31 IVs.
  • IVs are random when a Pokemon is caught. An 0ffspring inherits IVs from its parents when using Destiny Knot (item).
  • At level 50, 30 IVs act the same as 31 IVs for a stat.
  • 31 IVs is basically 31 extra points for a Pokemon's stat at level 100.
  • EV training is 63 extra points for a stat.
  • 63 (EV points) + 31 (IVs) = 94 free points for a stat, giving you the edge in Wi-Fi battles. You can outrun Pokemon if you have a higher Speed or hit harder if you have higher ATK/SP-ATK for example.

Here is an example of what a Pokemon (using LV100 Infernape with a Jolly nature and no invested EVs) in this example looks like with 0 IVs in all of its stats (left) and with 31 IVs in all of its stats (right). Take note of the 31 points difference.

How to find IVs of your Pokemon in X/Y

You can either use the IV Judge from Kiloude City's Pokemon Center or an online IV Calculator.

IV Judge in Kiloude City's Pokemon Center

The IV Judge tells you which stats your Pokemon have 31 IVs in.

Online IV Calculator

You need to find out the stats of your Pokemon at level 50 or 100 (must not have any EVs unless you know the EVs you gave the Pokemon). To do so, you can either have an online battle against a random player on the Player Search System (etc) or use the Battle Institute in North Boulevard of Lumiose City. Of course, turn off your 3DS to save time instead of battling.

Type in the Pokemon's stats, level and nature into one of the following IV Calculators :
If you receive an error, that means you entered the wrong numbers/level/nature or your Pokemon has EVs. I recommend checking the Super Training menu on the bottom of your 3DS to find if a Pokemon has EVs or not (you can't find out the number of EVs, however, you can see if it's untouched). If the Pokemon has EVs, you need EV reducing berries or a reset bag.

Pokemon XY/ORAS Chain Breeding Guide

After learning the basics above, you'll need to know how to actually IV breed in Pokemon XY/ORAS.

It's a simple process actually. You'll need :
  • A Ditto with the nature you want (so find a Ditto friend Safari).
  • A destiny knot (item).
  • An everstone (for passing down the nature you want).
How to :

  1. Breeding a male Pokemon with a Ditto helps pass down a nature faster to an offspring.
  2. Females pass down a nature faster when bred with a Pokemon of the same species.
  3. A Pokemon with the ability flame body in your party (eg. Talonflame) cuts down the time for eggs to catch. You cannot have 6 eggs in your party, so you should let one tag along.
  4. Hatching O-Power level 3 reduces the time for eggs to hatch by a significant amount.

Step 1 - Giving Pokemon the right items

Give the destiny knot to Pokemon A to help pass down IVs to the offspring easier and the everstone to the Ditto with the nature you want to pass down to the offspring.

Step 2 - Putting the Pokemon in the Daycare

Once you've done that, put both Pokemon in the Daycare and walk/ride around until you receive an egg from the Daycare man. Hatch it and check its IVs using either an IV calculator or the IV judge from Kiloude City.

One of the offsprings should have similar IVs to one of the parents as well as have the nature from the Ditto.

Step 3 - Replacing parents to get better IVs on the offspring

If the IVs of the offspring you hatch are better than the parent Pokemon, swap it with the parent in the Daycare to get better IVs on the next offspring. When you get the nature you want, you can also swap out the Ditto.

Example - IV Breeding for a perfect 5 IV Charmander :

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Charmander A 31/x/31/x/x/x + Ditto A 31/x/31/x/x/31 = Charmander B with 31/x/31/x/x/31
Charmander B with 31/x/31/x/x/31 + Ditto B x/x/x/31/31/31 = Charmander C with x/x/x/31/31/31
Charmander B with 31/x/31/x/x/31 + Charmander C with x/x/x/31/31/31 = Charmander D with 31/x/31/31/x/31
Charmander C with x/x/x/31/31/31 + Charmander D with 31/x/31/31/x/31 = Charmander E with 31/x/31/31/31/x
Charmander D with 31/x/31/31/x/31 + Charmander E with 31/x/31/31/31/x = Charmander F with 31/x/31/31/31/31

And there you have it, a perfect 5 IV Charmander assuming you weren't aiming for ATK IVs.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: The process will be a lot longer and there will be many attempts to get certain IVs. This is just an example.
If you have a 6 IV Ditto, breeding for better IV parents will be a lot faster and easier.

Step 3 Alternative - Replacing parents to get better IVs on offspring when using a 6 IV Ditto

The process uses all of the steps from this guide, however, you can keep the 6 IV Ditto in the Daycare until you get the correct 5 IVs on the Pokemon you're breeding for.

Just give the 6 IV Ditto the destiny knot and the other Pokemon (you're breeding it with) your everstone once you get the nature you want, then swap the Pokemon holding the everstone with the better IV offsprings when they hatch (don't forget to give it the everstone) and keep this up until you hatch your perfect 5 IV Pokemon.
